Little(?) League

While we were both listening to Whole Wheat Radio, John linked to a story in Slate about the Little League World Series. It’s an opinion piece about how some of the kids are too big to play even though they are the right age. The author would rather install some form of political correctness - “It’s only fair that, for a year or two, normal-sized kids should get a chance to feel big.” Another choice bit - the bigger kids are “overgrown bullies”, not because they are bullies, but simply by virtue of being bigger than some of the other kids.

I’m willing to guess the author wasn’t one of the bigger kids when he was 12.

I think he’s making too much of it - after all the Far East teams (usually from Japan or Taiwan) have generally had their way with the larger United States teams for years.

Someone commented on the article:

Yeah, and why do they let the smart, freakish kids compete in the National Spelling bee?

Quick Fix

News.com: Microsoft warns of critical IE flaws

Possible actions:

  1. Do nothing (terrible choice)
  2. Download this week’s set of patches from Microsoft (good choice)
  3. Ditch Internet Explorer for Firebird (best choice)

Update: In the comments, Phil Ringnalda mentions that the patches are necessary even if you aren’t using IE as your browser. That’s because of the way Microsoft has, um, leveraged their code and tied everything together.

Lack of Short-Term Memory

I performed a levergaed buyout of BBA and intended to regift the owners of “the game” 500 shares. Unfortunately, I didn’t write down who was part-owner. So, if I left you off the list, just drop me a line via BlogShares messaging and I’ll send over the shares I meant to already have given you!

Praise

Synopsis of Rob Neyer’s baseball column today.

The Good: “…Tony Womack’s very good at promoting literacy with the youngsters.”

The Bad: That’s the best thing he can say about you as a baseball player.

Is it Perl or Is it Python?

You too can make your Python code look like Perl. [via Daily Python-URL]

All kidding aside, it’s neat to see what you can do to cram code into a tight package for a contest. Just don’t ask me to figure out how it works.
